Sister Jaq'elyn Hyde

Sister Jaq joined the Big Easy Sisters in 2016. Her name is a play on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a Victorian story about navigating two personalities in one body. While working on her own doctorate, Jaq realized that that novel involved three of her favorite things: queer history, southern gothic literature, and New Orleans. Jaq was raised by a gay man and has always felt most at home around people who are theatrical, committed to others, and generally fabulous -- just like the Sisters! When she lived in San Francisco she always spent Easter with the Sisters, which is what inspired her novice project --  the first Hunky Jesus Contest this side of the Mississippi!

In addition to hosting the annual Hunky Jesus contest since 2018, Jaq has also been responsible for organizing events such as bingo nights, free gumbo night, service industry Thanksgiving, the All Saints/All Souls Day Mobile Altar processional, various second lines, and bar ministries.

Jaq is the second bi-sororical member of the Big Easy Sisters, meaning she completed the elevation process twice and now manifests as either a Sister or Guard, as the house needs. Her Guard persona is Rich Around, but every now and then she fashions herself in both habits at once, manifesting as Sister-Guard Jaq Around (and find out!)

Quotes:
"When life asks 'either or?', choose 'yes and!'"

"We are always in the process of becoming who we are."
